Fourteen traditional campgrounds grace the county, and most are located near a reservoir or river. Dillon Reservoir offers the most spaces. The largest campground, Prospector, located between Keystone and Breckenridge on Swan Mountain Road, provides 107 sites.
Heaton bay, Lowry, Peek One and Prospector campgrounds accept reservations (call 877-444-8777 or book online at ReserveUSA.com). The others work on a first-come, first-served basis. Tiger Run Resort allows RVs, but not tents, 365 days a year. In the summer, it hosts wine and cheese socials, line dancing and live entertainment. The clubhouse has a pool, two hot tubs and laundry facilities, and the area has basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. For those who like to rough it, plenty of trails throughout the county lead to backcountry campsites. Most require a permit and a nominal fee. Check with the Forest Service office, located at 680 Blue River Parkway in Silverthorne, or call (970) 262-3440.
Backcountry huts also are open from July through September. They range from Aspen, Leadville and Vail and link more than 300 miles of trails.
No matter where you camp, remember that it gets chilly at high elevations, so bring fleeces, hats, gloves and warm sleeping bags.
